L’Occitane.. what’s that? It is a skincare, bodycare, and fragrance store. So, why am I talking about it on a blog about RP? Glad you asked!
One day the founder, Olivier Baussan, saw a blind woman sampling his products at one of his stores. After this experience, he vowed to make his bath and body products accessible to visually impaired customers. He started out with adding Braille to a few packages. Now, Braille is on most every package. Every summer, the company also hosts a perfume school for visually impaired teenagers in France. They also hold weeklong workshops and donate the proceeds from certain limited edition products to charities for the blind.
There are about ten million blind people living in the US. So while comparatively, this does not benefit a huge population, it does benefit a significant amount of people. Why don’t other stores do this? L’Occitane estimates that adding Braille to their packages costs about 4 to 6 cents per package. With that being said, L’Occitane isn’t cheap. However, I like to put my money where my values are so I wouldn’t mind paying a little extra for such a great company. I don’t buy perfume, so that’s a moot point, but still..
One article I read about L’Occitane says that only one other brand worldwide puts Braille on their products and that is a French winery, M. Chapoutier.
I was introduced to this store during one of my O&M sessions with Micha. I had to learn to navigate several malls in Dallas, blindfolded and with a cane. We went in this store and I was so blown away by it. I show all my friends and family when we pass it. Ask my boyfriend.. I STILL try to show him even after several years. Haha.
