One of our awesome Christmas gifts was a “Do Not Pet Me I Am Working” sign. I had heard mixed reviews. Some said that people see these and ignore them.. Some said by the time others see it, they are already petting the dog, some said people just aren’t paying attention enough to see the sign. Those were the negatives. Others said there were some people that actually read the sign and learned or told others. I decided there was no harm in it and I really thought it might work, so I put it on my Christmas gift and my aunt, the veterinarian, got it for me. It was such a great gift from her.
I have found that it works really well. I have found some parents or adults who don’t understand but still tell their children what it says and encourage them to obey it. I have found it to be a catalyst for great learning opportunities as many people read it, don’t understand, and ask me questions. I then have the opportunity to educate them about service dogs and what distracting them does. I haven’t had anybody try and pet her while the sign is on. I had one person who asked me to pet her and I said no (nicely) and then pointed to the sign. She understood.
I really like the sign and am anxious to continue to see others’ reactions to it.
