So I have a lot of big events to still catch up on but while I was thinking about it, I wanted to write a quick blog. Tonight was the first night that Makiko didn’t poop at her regular after dinner relieving. First time in a month (since I’ve had her!). So I got a little worried, but not too much. It was also the night that I went to the grocery store and got an extra kong for Makiko (the black one kept disappearing out of sight so I had to get a red one to find it better.) I had been thinking for quite a while about putting some human food in there, bananas and peanut butter, because I had heard while in training that these were appropriate in moderation. So after she didn’t poop during any of the afternoon/evening relieving times, but peed a lot, I decided to try and stimulate her while having some fun. I stuffed a kong with peanut butter, a few pieces of banana, and the rest of her daily treat ration of kibble. I plugged the small hole of the kong with peanut butter, put in a few slices of banana, kibble, a little more banana, and then peanut butter to seal off the big hole. I then froze it. It was late by this time so I couldn’t freeze it for long but I froze it for an hour. She played with it for 35 or so minutes and for the first good portion of that time she was just licking and licking and licking the peanut butter. It was ADORABLE. I have a picture of her sticking her tongue out almost all the way licking the kong, as well as pictures of the Kong frozen with the stuff. I’ll attach them below.
So, after playing with her with this kong and her having lots and lots of water all day long, we went outside and she pooped… alot! This was a big relief! She didn’t get as much exercise today as she normally does and yesterday we were at a baseball game for much of the afternoon, but I still tried to give her a lot of water. So who knows what it is or what combination (dehydration, not a lot of activity, etc) but after the Kong and some more play, all is well with her bowels, I think. 🙂
I can’t give her the Kong with the banana and peanut butter too much because it adds to her caloric intake and we all watch our guide dog’s weight very closely but it sure was a fun treat. After she finished her Kong, I made up another with the peanut butter, banana, etc so I have 2 kongs in the freezer ready to go whenever I decide. 🙂 And they will be a lot more frozen this time so that will add to the length of time it entertains her. 🙂
She shall have an extremely busy day on Wednesday (as will I too of course) so I may give her one then.
I’ll catch up on the blogs soon, promise.
