So, there is this adorable puppy that a friend adopted off of the streets. She is about 10 weeks, a golden terrier. Adorable. She is expected to only get to be about 35 lbs. Of course she isn’t housebroken, trained, etc but they are really working with her. She got really feisty the other night and wanted to play. We were at my boyfriend’s house and she found one of Makiko’s toys. Well, Makiko doesn’t really like others playing with her toys, I don’t think. She appears to get sad and just walks away. She won’t tug back or anything. She’ll only play rough like that with people she really knows and likes.. but they have to be people. So she retreated a few times and then finally I just got the toy back from the puppy and hid it from him. Makiko didn’t want to play with it after that but I didn’t want her being sad that another dog was playing with one of her favorite toys. A little while later this dog started trying to play with Makiko by jumping on her and I think trying to like nibble on her when she jumped. Makiko didn’t like that. She stayed very still and didn’t even look at her. So I got that to stop relatively quickly, but then when I wasn’t paying attention later the puppy came and tried to do it again and then Makiko immediately tried to go to my boyfriend who was on the other side of the room, hide out with him, and then when he moved she tried to go to the door, signaling she wanted out of the apartment. Most of the time that means she has to use the restroom but I knew she didn’t at that time so I could tell she was just really uncomfortable. So we hung out far away from the puppy for quite a while together, she got cozy and cuddly and went to sleep.. on my face. 🙂 Her face was laying on top of my face. It was pretty cute. Then after they all left, we noticed a pink sore on the corner of Makiko’s eye. This freaked me out. I sent an email to the vet that evening with pictures and early the next morning he emailed me back and said we should go see him. He wasn’t working that day but we saw the other vet. Makiko likes the guy vet, not the girl vet, but unfortunately we had to see the girl vet. She couldn’t figure out exactly what it was but had two speculations. 1) It was a scratch, small puncture, or abrasion that was caused by the puppy and just got inflamed and irrupted (likely case) or 2) She got bit by something and was allergic to it. I really think it was the first one because we’ve never had this problem before. It was mostly going away by the next morning though so that was good. Side topic: I’m not really sure why Makiko doesn’t like the girl vet but I have a few speculations. On one of the visits the girl vet tried to pull Makiko toward her because she was obviously scared and Makiko’s little sensitive self didn’t like that. Ever since then it’s been clear that she didn’t like the girl vet. I don’t get why that vet would try and force her to her like that, knowing she is a service dog and everything and is well behaved, but what can you do? So if at all possible, I request the male vet, he is wonderful. He is actually the owner of Denton Veterinary Center too. Of course though I couldn’t request him in this situation because we wanted to get Makiko in on such short notice. While we were there, I mentioned that she had been itching a lot. When this happened a few months ago, the doctor thought she had seasonal allergies so she gave her a steroid. I requested another steroid shot because this seemed to really help. The female vet suggested I just give her Benadryl instead. I told her I couldn’t give her Benadryl because she was a working guide dog and I needed her to not be drowsy for both of our safety. She didn’t seem to get that. So I pushed more for the steroid shot and she replied, “Well, since she is a frequent flier with the steroid shots, I don’t think she should get one.” Um, frequent flier? So I told her that we had gotten a steroid shot a grand total of 1 time (1!).. and she said she must have gotten her confused with another dog. This made me a little uneasy.. didn’t she read the chart? It’s really not that extensive as Makiko’s health is really pretty good so I kind of doubt she did. Ah well. Another reason to request the male doctor, I suppose. Ultimately we ended up getting the steroid shot and were on our merry way. The whole vet visit took about 15 minutes. I do like that about that place, they are very efficient.
So now things are seeming to get better, she isn’t scratching as much, the eye sore isn’t apparent anymore. We are on the way to recovery! 🙂 Just in time for school to start too!
