October 1 – Sister’s Birthday and Blindness Awareness Month

October 1st is a big day in my world.

First and foremost, it is my beautiful sister’s birthday. She is insanely smart, so giving, energetic, and passionate. I love her so much and wish her the best birthday ever. If you know us, you know that I’m 4’11/5′ and she is 5’9 or so.. we are very different, on the surface level and in most ways. We do both really love to help others and are very social people though. She is currently in Med School so who knows if she is partying it up tonight or studying, but my guess would be studying because she is THAT devoted to her studies and stresses a lot. 🙂 (That also just MIGHT be a similar trait we have too, haha.)

But it’s also DAY 1 of Blindness Awareness Month or as Joy says “BAM!”

“Who is Joy?” Joy is a young mother of 2 who has Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) like me. She has a twin sister, Jenelle, who also has RP. They are also bloggers on The Double Vision Blog. For Blindness Awareness Month, Joy surprised her sister Jenelle with this video. I’m not sure exactly what her husband does professionally but he’s pretty talented (videographer, musician, etc). Makiko and I are also in a picture featured at the end of this video. It is VERY well done and beautiful.

In honor of Blindness Awareness month this October, Joy shares her journey of shame, vulnerability and courage. With both humor and insight, Joy and her twin sister, Jenelle, share their stories of life with RP at doublevisionblog.com.

They have been greatly influenced by the work of shame researcher, Brene Brown.`

Sincere love and gratitude to Ben Thomas, for his stellar production and video-editing skills and for putting up with his knit-picky film-ignorant, over-zealous, script-writing wife.

Thank you, darling Lucy Joy, for sharing your musical gifts, presence and light.

Special thanks to Andrew and Stephanie Schones for filming the speaking portions…your skill and creative advice were instrumental in completing this project. And Jess Price for the B-roll video footage….thanks for the amazing footage, creative eye and fun evening! And props to Scott and Amanda Hodge for script feedback and enthusiastic encouragement. And to the SWs….you know why.

What are YOUR thoughts on the video? Does it resonate at all with you? I’ll give my thoughts next time.

I’m going to try and post more as it is Blindness Awareness Month and well, that’s what this blog is pretty much all about. I have some catching up to do on what’s been going on with us recently and I have a lot on my heart to blog about, just have to make time to sit down and do it.

Happy BAM!
